The Focus Party is an obscure political party with six MEPs and 43 local councillors (a cross between the Lib Dems & UKIP).
Their leader and only MP dies, amid scandal (autoasphyxia), and a by-election ensues and leadership challenge ensues. A fairly new councillor in the constituency, Simon (ambitious but naive), an ex lower-league footballer is elected, against the odds, for the Focus Party and is immediately thrust into a leadership bid – ‘Simon is the unity candidate’.
Amid various attempts to gain popularity and power they make all sorts of outlandish offers to unscrupulous individuals in return for money and recognition. Against the odds, they win three seats in the next election - a hung parliament. The Focus party become the kingmakers, and have to start to deliver on some of their deals.
